{"id":475,"date":"2010-08-15T14:10:06","date_gmt":"2010-08-15T18:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/?p=475"},"modified":"2010-08-15T14:10:06","modified_gmt":"2010-08-15T18:10:06","slug":"how-it-all-began","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/?p=475","title":{"rendered":"How It All Began"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four score and Eighteen years ago this morning, in a church that\u2019s reputed to be still standing, the Spouse Of the Big Ugly Man Doll and I stood up in front of a vast gathering of family, friends, gentle readers, and complete strangers and swapped vows, rings, and spit.\u00a0 I believe it speaks volumes about the longevity of relationships and the strength of the Internet as a social tool that if you\u2019re reading this, there\u2019s a good chance you were there.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_477\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-477\" class=\"size-full wp-image-477\" title=\"Wedded Kiss\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_0010.jpg\" alt=\"Swapping Vows, Rings, and Spit\" width=\"351\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_0010.jpg 351w, http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_0010-265x300.jpg 265w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-477\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Swapping Vows, Rings, and Spit<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The marriage almost didn\u2019t last.\u00a0 We went from the church (Our Lady of the Mountains of Madness) to the reception hall in a 1935 Packard, driven by a guy in his mid-80s.\u00a0 With thick glasses.\u00a0 In the rain.\u00a0 With no windshield wipers.\u00a0 On twisty winding mountain roads.\u00a0 It was very romantic, and it remains one of the most terrifying rides I\u2019ve ever been on \u2013 Disney\u2019s got nothing on this.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_478\" style=\"width: 685px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-478\" class=\"size-full wp-image-478\" title=\"1935 Packard\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_0006.jpg\" alt=\"1935 Packard. Oh, and a bride.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The reception was classic, including the DJ introducing each song.\u00a0 \u201cAnd now, a special request from the Groom to the Bride:\u00a0 \u2018All of My Love\u2019 by Mister Led Zeppelin.\u201d\u00a0 My uncle\u2019s comment summed up the reaction: \u201cHey, next why don\u2019t you have him play something by Mrs. Metallica?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are a few differences now, 18 years later.\u00a0 The most obvious is the one that the Reigning Queen of Pink points out every time she sees our wedding pictures.\u00a0 \u201cTHAT\u2019S Mommy and Daddy?\u00a0 You were thin!\u00a0 What the heck happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_479\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-479\" class=\"size-full wp-image-479\" title=\"1935 Packard\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSC_0008.jpg\" alt=\"1935 Packard.
