{"id":1084,"date":"2011-02-24T09:09:33","date_gmt":"2011-02-24T13:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/?p=1084"},"modified":"2011-02-24T09:09:33","modified_gmt":"2011-02-24T13:09:33","slug":"good-ole-jules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/?p=1084","title":{"rendered":"Good ole Jules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past February 8th, Google posted <a title=\"Jules Verne Birthday Doodle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/logos\/verne.html\" target=\"_blank\">the coolest &#8220;Google Doodle&#8221; mini-app EVER<\/a>\u00a0(and there&#8217;s a <a title=\"BIG Jules Verne Birthday Doodle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/logos\/verne_hd.html\" target=\"_blank\">hi-res version of it here<\/a>).\u00a0 Jules Verne was one of my boyhood heroes &#8211; one of the best books I read in my youth was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Around the World in 80 Days<\/span>, which given my life as an Air Force brat resonated with me pretty well.\u00a0 Phileas Fogg and Passepartout were heros, for different reasons &#8211; Fogg for being a Don Quixote adventurer, answering to no one but himself, setting out to take huge risks to prove a rediculose point for no better reason than because he said he could; and Passepartout playing the loyal Sancho Panza, facilitating his employer&#8217;s madness while by and large enjoying the ride.\u00a0\u00a0 (As we said about my ancient Uncle Zignorine, when he thought he was a chicken &#8211; sure, it&#8217;s a shame, but we need the eggs.)<\/p>\n<p>Jules Verne predicted the future, from submersible ships to space flight, including the concept of mutually assured destruction as a deterrent to war, high-speed trains, calculators, a worldwide &#8220;telegraphic&#8221; communications network that sounds suspiciously like the Internet, and the idea that governments would execute criminals by electric charge.\u00a0\u00a0 That was a hell of a leap in 1863.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Google doodle also reminded me of <a title=\"Mr. Bookseller, by Darko Macan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/?page_id=1122\" target=\"_self\">this comic<\/a>, which I think I&#8217;ve linked to here before &#8211; but it bears repeating.\u00a0 It&#8217;s called &#8220;Mr. Bookseller&#8221; by a guy named <a title=\"Darko Macan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darko_Macan\" target=\"_blank\">Darko Macan<\/a>, a brilliant artist.\u00a0 The depiction of Anton re-reading his old copy of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">20,000 Leagues Under the Sea<\/span> came to mind as I navigated the Google artwork &#8211; lost again as I was in the memory of an old book.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Good stuff, and my hat&#8217;s off to Google for that one.\u00a0\u00a0 Next up, <a title=\"Time Magazine finds the Singularity\" href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/health\/article\/0,8599,2048138,00.html?xid=rss-mostpopular\" target=\"_blank\">stepping into the future with Ray Kurzweil<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jules Verne predicted the future, from submersible ships to space flight, including the concept of mutually assured destruction as a deterrent to war, high-speed trains, calculators, a worldwide &#8220;telegraphic&#8221; communications network that sounds suspiciously like the Internet, and the idea that governments would execute criminals by electric charge.
