{"id":1079,"date":"2011-02-07T14:42:50","date_gmt":"2011-02-07T18:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/?p=1079"},"modified":"2011-02-07T14:51:18","modified_gmt":"2011-02-07T18:51:18","slug":"french-garlic-soup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.biguglymandoll.com\/?p=1079","title":{"rendered":"French Garlic Soup?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since negative examples tend to be more useful, here&#8217;s something we won\u2019t be doing for Valentine&#8217;s Day:\u00a0 <a title=\"Choices by Shawn - Meh.\" href=\"http:\/\/choicesbyshawn.com\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Choices by Shawn\/<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re known for their gluten-free and \u201cspecial menu\u201d items, and since we have more than one diet issue in our house, and SOBUMD had a coupon, we went Saturday night, 5:30pm &#8211; party of 5 (2 adults, 2 kids and a tween).\u00a0 Despite the lack of anyone else I could see in the restaurant, they sat us near the door to the kitchen area, with the huge refrigerator compressor cycling loudly enough to drown out conversation.\u00a0 Maybe they saw 3 kids and figured we were going to be loud enough anyway.\u00a0 Forgivable, if annoying.<\/p>\n<p>The food, on the other hand&#8230;\u00a0 Well, OK, forgivable.\u00a0 Nothing was bad, or even &#8220;not good.&#8221;\u00a0 The table rolls were on aged side, but again &#8211; not bad.\u00a0 But there wasn&#8217;t a thing put on our table that I couldn&#8217;t have made better at home.\u00a0 Ribeye was done medium rare, on spec and as requested (which was impressive considering how thin it was), and was decent.\u00a0 Gnocchi with spinach and pine nuts was OK.\u00a0 Fried chicken was OK.\u00a0 Mac and cheese was eaten and rated by the 10-yr-old (who knows everything you could ask about Mac-n-Cheese) as &#8220;almost as good as Kraft.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The French Onion Soup was a study in hiring disaffected youth in the kitchen.\u00a0 First, this was French Garlic Soup &#8211; the onions were an afterthought.\u00a0 The broth was good, as long as you like garlic, but the cheese on top looked like it had come from the bag of shredded parmesan and straight to the table.\u00a0 It was still cool, sitting on the top of the soup when it reached me, and never did really melt.\u00a0 A quick blowtorch would have fixed it, but I&#8217;m not allowed to carry mine anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Garlic is a food group here.\u00a0 The French Garlic Soup was a warm up for the garlic fries, the garlic ribeye, the garlic mashed potatoes, the garlic gravy, and the garlic on the chicken.\u00a0 Not that any of it was bad, but taken all together it was a little overwhelming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They have ice cream, homemade, and in many flavors.\u00a0 We tried four of them.\u00a0 Again, they were all pretty good; my coffee ice cream was in fact very yummy.\u00a0 \u00a0And I should mention that the glass of Cabernet I had for $7 was quite good, went well with the steak, and was a very generous pour into a big glass.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All in all, considering the compressor, the food, and the cost, I\u2019d say 6.5 out of a possible 10.\u00a0 Nothing bad, pleasant if humorless wait-staff (\u201cWould you like boxes for anyone?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not sure the kids would fit, how big are they?\u201d\u00a0&#8211; got nothing), just not as good as I was hoping for with a night out.\u00a0 They may do better with brunch and tea and breakfast stuff; if anyone tries, please let me know!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The French Onion Soup was a study in hiring disaffected youth in the kitchen.
